I am committed to write non-spoiler reviews for all three Oremere books. This requirement always creates difficulties for me because the definition of spoilers varies so widely. For these Oremere reviews I have decided to be guided by what Shealea, the Caffeine Book Tour Meister herself, has released in her post about this tour. She tagged the Oremere series with several themes of interest.
I'd like to discuss the use of alcoholism as a theme first because it was relatively prominent in Heart of Mist. Readers who find this sort of content painful for personal reasons may want to avoid it, but I think it could be valuable to them. There was a scene in this book that raised an important point about alcoholism, and caused me to realize that I shouldn't give up on the character involved.
There was a sub-plot involving a blind character. To my relief she wasn't some sort of improbable superhero. I found her realistic. Although it wasn't actually part of the plot, she also piqued my curiosity about writing by hand in braille. I conducted a search on this subject and found instructions on WikiHow.
Finally, Shealea tagged the Oremere books for LGBT content. In Heart of Mist, this was a minor theme that was dealt with briefly. That particular scene highlighted the issue of loyalty which is always of extreme significance in a military context. There was no ongoing relationship in the LGBT category.
Plot-wise, I experienced Heart of Mist as the sort of book that builds slowly in intensity. There was a cliffhanger ending, so I was glad to have Reign of Mist waiting for me on my Kindle.
